A garage door problem starts with the symptom.

A garage door that stops halfway can interrupt the whole day. Start with what you noticed: whether the door moved, how it sounded and what happened when you used the usual control.

The door and the opener are different parts of the story

A remote that produces no response does not identify a failed motor. A door that begins to move and then stops does not, by itself, identify a broken spring. Several issues can produce similar symptoms.

Describe the last normal opening and what changed after that. If the door is visibly uneven, damaged or unstable, stop trying to operate it and keep people clear while arranging an assessment.

Four useful things to describe

Say whether the door will not move at all, stops partway, travels unevenly or fails to respond to a control. Mention any unusual sound and whether the car is inside. You do not need to recreate the fault for a photo.

If you can safely read the existing opener's make or model without climbing or reaching into the mechanism, have that information ready. Otherwise, simply describe the door and leave the equipment check for the appropriate person.

Leave tensioned parts alone

Garage-door springs and cables work under tension. Adjusting them, loosening their attachments or trying to straighten a track is not a useful first step for a homeowner. A trained professional should assess that work.

Do not force an uneven door, repeatedly run a straining opener or stand beneath a door that appears unstable. If the garage is attached, use a different safe entrance when one is available.

Prepare the request, not the diagnosis

Have the street address, approximate door size and a plain description of the symptom. Say whether it is a single or double residential door, whether access to the garage is available and who can authorize the work.

An overhead garage door is different from the ordinary door between the garage and the house. If the problem is that smaller door's lock or key, mention it so the request can be directed properly.

Ask what the proposed repair includes

The specific door, opener and parts need to be considered before a repair scope is agreed. Ask about the assessment, applicable charges, parts and any changes that may follow inspection.
